Genesis 40:1-23
Joseph’s life had taken him from the comfort of home to the darkness of a prison, yet the presence of God had not abandoned him there. Falsely accused and deprived of his freedom, he could have surrendered to despair. Instead, Joseph continued to trust that the Lord was sovereign over circumstances he could not understand. Even in confinement, God gave him favor, responsibility, and opportunities that would eventually serve a purpose far greater than Joseph could see.
When two troubled prisoners were disturbed by dreams they could not explain, Joseph refused to claim wisdom for himself. He directed their attention to the God who alone holds the future and reveals what people cannot discover on their own. The events that followed proved that Joseph’s confidence was well placed. One man was restored, another faced judgment, and the outcome unfolded exactly as God had revealed. Yet Joseph’s own situation did not immediately change.
Perhaps the most difficult moment came after the cupbearer regained his position and forgot the man who had helped him. Joseph remained behind in prison, waiting through another long season while the promise of freedom seemed delayed. But waiting is not the same as being forgotten. People may fail us, overlook us, or move on without remembering the kindness we showed them, but the faithfulness of God is not dependent on human gratitude. What appears to be a delay can still be part of God’s timing and His sovereign purpose.
This story also turns our attention toward gratitude. God often works through the kindness, encouragement, prayers, and faithfulness of other people, and those blessings should not be quickly forgotten. Remembering those who have helped us can lead us to pray for them, thank God for them, and become more willing to extend that same grace to others. Who has God used to strengthen or encourage you, and have you remembered that the help you once received may now be an opportunity for you to pass on?
