Matthew 5:1-6
On the hillside, Jesus spoke words that challenged every worldly standard, revealing a kingdom where the overlooked and humble are lifted high. He described those who are poor in spirit, who mourn over sin, the meek, and those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. These are not the powerful or celebrated, but those who recognize their deep need for God. To them, He promises the greatest inheritance: the Kingdom of Heaven.
Being poor in spirit is an acknowledgment of our emptiness without grace. Mourning over sin opens the door to comfort, and meekness, often seen as weakness, becomes a path to inheriting the earth. Hunger and thirst for righteousness are satisfied only in Christ, revealing a divine economy that reverses human expectations. God’s favor rests not on strength or status, but on hearts surrendered and dependent on Him.
The Beatitudes invite reflection on true spiritual wealth. The humble, the broken, and those longing for God’s justice are counted blessed in ways the world cannot measure. In this upside-down kingdom, the spiritual beggar who clings to Jesus in faith is richer than any earthly king. How does this perspective shape the way we live, serve, and seek God today? Where are we seeking fulfillment apart from Him, and where are we embracing His promise of blessing?
