Matthew 6:19-24
There is a subtle pull in life that many fail to notice—a quiet undertow drawing hearts away from God. Jesus warns that treasures stored on earth can, in fact, begin to store us. The wealth, status, and approval we cling to can quietly become our masters, and even as we claim to walk with God, our hearts may already be drifting downstream.
Every follower of Christ lives in the tension between two worlds. The world urges, “Hold tighter,” while Jesus calls, “Let go.” The world whispers, “You deserve more,” and Christ invites, “Lay up treasure in heaven.” Earthly gain tempts us to measure life by what we possess, but true discipleship measures life by what we give. When our vision is clouded by self-focus or greed, we forget a fundamental truth: nothing we own is eternal, yet everything surrendered to God endures forever.
Jesus calls His followers to swim against the current, to resist the pull toward temporary rewards and remain anchored in eternal truth. Where our treasure is, there our hearts will follow. Our challenge is not in how much we have, but in what controls our devotion, guides our priorities, and captures our affection.
Who or what truly holds your heart today, and will you choose to let Christ be your master over all else?
