Matthew 23:34-39
In this teaching, we encounter one of the most tender and heartbreaking laments of Scripture. Jesus looks upon Jerusalem, the city of God, and weeps—not in anger, but in overwhelming love and sorrow. He mourns a people who have rejected the truth, longing to gather them under His protective care, like a mother hen shielding her chicks. His words reveal the depth of divine compassion and the pain of love turned away.
The imagery of the mother hen reminds us of God’s desire to protect, nurture, and guide His people. Yet rejection brings consequences. The same Messiah the nation awaited stood before them offering salvation, but they turned away, leading to judgment and desolation. Even so, hope remains. Jesus’ lament ends with a promise: a day will come when eyes are opened, hearts are restored, and His people will recognize their Savior. God’s faithfulness endures even when His people falter.
This passage invites reflection on our own response to God’s call. Like the loving parent longing for a wandering child, Christ continues to extend mercy and protection. The question remains for each of us: will we run to Him and find refuge under His wings, or turn away from the love He freely offers? How might you open your heart today to receive the shelter and care of the One who weeps for you?
