3 John 1:1-14
The Apostle John offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the early church, revealing a story of love, truth, pride, and faithfulness. Through the lives of three men—Gaius, Diotrephes, and Demetrius—we see contrasting paths: humility and service, self-promotion and pride, and integrity shaped by God’s truth. Gaius exemplifies a heart devoted to Christ and His people, walking faithfully in love. Diotrephes warns of the dangers of pride and ambition within the church, while Demetrius models a life of steadfast integrity and godly character.
“Naming Names” reminds us that true discipleship goes beyond words—it is revealed in obedience, love, and faithful service. Spiritual health is not measured by position, influence, or recognition, but by a life surrendered to God and marked by humility. John’s timeless words still resonate: “Do not imitate what is evil, but what is good.” In a world filled with distractions, temptations, and pride, walking in truth is a light that cannot be hidden, shaping both personal character and the witness of the church.
As you reflect on this passage, consider your own heart: Are you walking faithfully like Gaius, or has pride and self-interest like Diotrephes taken root? May God cultivate in us the integrity and steadfastness of Demetrius, whose life points others to Christ. The truth of God endures forever, and those who embrace it will shine with His glory, unashamed before the world.
