Matthew 20:20-28
We are given a penetrating glimpse into the human heart—our longing for recognition, honor, and status. When James and John, accompanied by their mother, asked Jesus to grant them the highest positions in His kingdom, they revealed not only a misunderstanding of His mission but also the pride that so easily takes root in even devoted hearts. While Christ spoke of the cross, His followers dreamed of crowns.
Our world mirrors this temptation. Ambition, self-promotion, and the pursuit of personal glory dominate our culture, while humility is often overlooked or dismissed. Yet Jesus flips that thinking entirely. True greatness in His kingdom is measured not by position or applause, but by sacrifice and service. The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, giving His life as a ransom for many. His example defines the heart of the Gospel: the lowest place leads to the highest honor, and the way to life is found through the cross.
Every believer is faced with a choice: pursue worldly approval or embrace the likeness of Christ. The path to lasting significance runs through humility, obedience, and selfless love. How are we called to serve today? Where can we lay down our pride and follow the Savior who kneels to lift others? Greatness in the eyes of heaven is not measured by how high we rise, but by how fully we surrender to serve.
