Luke 13:31-35
Jesus stands fearless in the face of death threats, unmoved by the schemes of Herod, the cunning “fox” who seeks to end His ministry. Yet His heart is filled not with fear, but with compassion. Looking toward Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and rejects the Messiah, He laments, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem… how often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you would not.” These words reveal both God’s justice and mercy—the heartbreak of divine love refused, and the steadfast faithfulness of the Savior who still calls sinners to Himself.
Even as Jesus moves toward the cross, no human power can thwart God’s redemptive plan. Herod’s threats, the Pharisees’ lies, and the crowds’ unbelief serve only to fulfill what was written before the foundation of the world. Through rejection, betrayal, and death, Christ secures eternal life for all who trust Him. Though Israel experienced desolation, God’s promise remains: one day they will see Him and proclaim, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”
From desolation to delight—that is the story not only of Israel’s restoration, but of every heart that turns from rebellion to redemption. The same Jesus who wept over Jerusalem still longs to gather lost souls under His wings of grace. Though we wander, He calls; though we rebel, He invites; and when we return, He restores. In His faithfulness, hope remains. How might you respond to His call today? Where could you experience His mercy and find restoration in the midst of life’s desolation?
