For three and a half years, Israel endured a devastating drought. Crops withered, livestock perished, and the people suffered greatly. Yet instead of turning back to God, King Ahab and Queen Jezebel led the nation further into idolatry, worshiping Baal, the supposed god of thunder and rain.

Amid this spiritual darkness stood Elijah—a prophet of unwavering courage and conviction. On Mount Carmel, he confronted the prophets of Baal, challenging them to call upon their false god. They cried out, cut themselves, and begged for fire, but only silence answered. Then Elijah prayed to the one true God, and fire fell from heaven, consuming the sacrifice, the altar, and even the surrounding water. Witnessing this, the people fell on their faces, proclaiming, “The Lord, He is God!” Soon after, Elijah’s prayer brought rain, ending the long drought.

Elijah’s life reminds us that God’s power surpasses every idol and that one faithful servant can stand against a nation’s sin. Yet he was human, experiencing fear, doubt, and weakness. God strengthened him, provided for him, and ultimately took him to heaven in a whirlwind of fire, never tasting death.
