John 11:47-57
John 11:47–57 exposes the dangerous reality of spiritual hypocrisy, showing how outward appearances can hide inner corruption. After Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead—a miraculous display of power and compassion—the leaders of Israel respond not with awe or worship, but with fear and scheming. Their faith is a façade, focused on maintaining reputation, control, and power rather than pursuing truth or righteousness.
The miracles of Christ, from opening blind eyes to restoring life itself, stand as undeniable evidence of His divinity. Yet the Pharisees and chief priests chose to cover the truth with deceit and pride. Even Caiaphas, in plotting the death of Jesus, unwittingly proclaims God’s plan: the very death intended for destruction becomes the instrument of redemption, bringing salvation and unity to God’s people through Christ.
This passage challenges us today to examine our own hearts. How often do we whitewash sin with excuses or hide our rebellion behind appearances? Jesus sees every layer of pretense and every concealed motive. His light exposes our darkness not to shame us, but to redeem us. The pressing question remains: will we cling to false purity, protecting our image, or will we step into His light, embrace His truth, and experience the abundant life He offers?
