Acts 4:32-5:11
In Acts 4:32–5:11, the early church offers a vivid picture of unity, generosity, and sacrificial love. Believers shared everything in common, giving joyfully and trusting God to provide, so that no one among them lacked. Barnabas, known as the “son of encouragement,” exemplified this spirit, selling his land and laying the full proceeds at the apostles’ feet. His wholehearted generosity highlighted the beauty of a heart fully surrendered to Christ.
Yet even in a community marked by purity and grace, the enemy seeks to corrupt. Ananias and Sapphira attempted to deceive the apostles and the Holy Spirit, pretending to give fully while secretly keeping part of the proceeds. Their sin was not merely greed—it was hypocrisy. They sought the appearance of holiness without true surrender.
God, who examines hearts, exposed their deceit. His judgment was immediate and sobering, leaving the church in awe and reverent fear. The lesson is clear: God values integrity over image, obedience over outward appearances, and truth over pretense. The focus is not the price of a gift but the condition of the heart giving it. His discipline purifies His church and calls every believer to live transparently, walk faithfully, and honor Him with sincerity in every action. How does this challenge you to examine the motives behind your own giving and service?
