1 John 3:11-24
Everyone lives under an influence—either the influence of the enemy or the influence of Christ. In 1 John 3, John calls believers to examine where their allegiance truly lies. The world’s hatred for righteousness is obvious, but the greater danger is when those who profess to follow Jesus live as though they still belong to it. The evidence of belonging to God is not in words alone, but in obedience and love.
John points to the story of Cain and Abel to illustrate two spiritual lineages: the child of the evil one and the child of God. Cain was consumed by pride, self-will, and hatred, while Abel followed faith and obedience. Today, the distinction remains. True followers of Christ are recognized by deeds that reflect His heart—acts of love that give, serve, sacrifice, and mirror the life of Jesus, who laid down His life for us.
Believers are called to love one another sincerely and sacrificially, proving that they have passed from death into life. Obedience grants confidence before God and silences the accusations of our own hearts. Though our conscience may condemn, God’s grace is greater. His Spirit within us testifies that we belong to Him. Freed from the influence of the enemy, we are empowered to love, forgive, and glorify Christ in both truth and action.
Where are we placing our influence—under the enemy’s sway, or in the power and love of Christ that transforms our hearts and actions?
