Luke 7:11-17
Death is often seen as the final divider, the end of relationships, plans, and dreams. Yet in Luke 7:11–17, Jesus turns that understanding upside down. A widow mourns the loss of her only son, grief heavy in her heart, the silence of death pressing in. But then Jesus comes — the Lord of Life, moving toward a scene that seemed beyond hope.
On the road outside Nain, He encounters sorrow and sees the pain that no human hand can heal. Moved with compassion, He reaches out and touches what everyone else had left behind — the lifeless body of the young man — and declares, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” In that moment, life floods the dead body. Breath returns. The son speaks, rises, and is restored to his mother. Grief turns to wonder, mourning to marvel, and the power of death itself is undone by the authority of Christ.
This miracle is more than a historical event — it is a living picture of the Gospel. Spiritually, we are often like the dead young man: powerless, broken, and in need of life that only Christ can give. Yet He comes to us with compassion, calling us from darkness into light. When Jesus speaks, even the hold of death is broken. The funeral is over, because the One who conquered death walks among us, bringing hope, restoration, and life that lasts forever.
