1 Corinthians 11:17-34
The Apostle Paul offers one of Scripture’s most profound instructions on approaching the Lord’s Table. In Corinth, a sacred remembrance had been distorted into selfish indulgence — division replaced unity, and reverence was lost. Guided by the Spirit, Paul calls the believers back to the true meaning of the Lord’s Supper: a time of humble reflection, repentance, and gratitude before a holy God.
The Lord’s Supper is far more than a ritual; it is a remembrance of redemption. On the night He was betrayed, Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, and broke it, declaring, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” He then shared the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood.” Each time we partake, we proclaim His death until He returns. This sacred act reminds us that forgiveness comes not from our merit, but from His mercy, uniting believers across time and space at the foot of the cross.
Paul cautions that partaking “in an unworthy manner” treats Christ’s sacrifice lightly, forgetting the holiness of the One who gave everything for us. Every believer is called to examine their heart, confess sin, forgive others, and approach the table cleansed by grace. The bread and cup are living testimonies of divine love — reminders that Jesus’ body was broken and His blood poured out so that we might live in Him forever. The Lord’s Supper invites us not only to remember the cross, but to live in its light: in unity, humility, worship, and anticipation of His glorious return. How does your heart prepare to meet Him at the table today?
