Acts 7:1-16
In the unfolding story of Stephen’s defense, we are drawn into a vision that transcends the moment—a vision of God’s redemptive plan across generations. As the first Christian martyr speaks, his words direct attention away from pride and toward the sweeping arc of salvation. He reminds his listeners of Abraham’s faithful journey, Joseph’s suffering and rise, and the covenant promises that pointed ultimately to Christ. Every event, every trial, every act of God’s providence, reveals a Savior who had been long anticipated, yet often overlooked. Through Stephen’s Spirit-filled testimony, we are invited to see what he saw: the grandeur of God’s plan, the big picture of redemption moving steadily through history.
Abraham left his home in obedience to God’s call, trusting in a promise he could not yet fully see. Joseph endured betrayal and hardship, only to become a vessel of salvation for those who had wronged him—a vivid foreshadowing of Christ, who was pierced yet risen, bringing redemption to all. Stephen’s account is not merely a recounting of history; it is both a challenge and an invitation. Like the Sanhedrin, we can become blind to God’s purposes when we cling to religion over relationship, rituals over repentance. But when hearts are open, the trials and triumphs of the past illuminate the mercy and faithfulness of God.
God’s hand moves with the same precision today as it did in Abraham’s time. He calls us to trust Him, to relinquish the fleeting idols of this world, and to see life through the lens of His eternal plan. Every story, every struggle, every promise in Scripture points to Jesus. How might seeing the bigger picture of God’s plan reshape the way you live, trust, and hope today?
