Matthew 12:1-14
There is a spiritual danger of becoming "stuck in the mud"... In the habits and hard-heartedness that keep us from God. Many can know Scripture, yet miss its heart, valuing rules over mercy and ritual over compassion. When Jesus’ disciples plucked grain to satisfy hunger, the religious leaders saw only lawbreaking, trapped in pride and unbelief. Their hearts had become a spiritual mire, unable to recognize the work of God before their eyes.
Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath, reveals a higher way: a heart of mercy. When He healed the man with the withered hand, He showed that true faith is measured not by adherence to rules, but by love in action. Miracles do not compel worship in those unwilling to humble themselves, and the more truth is revealed, the deeper the obstinate heart can sink. Yet His mercy remains, reaching toward all who will receive it.
We are called to examine our own lives: are we stuck in ways that prevent God’s work in us? Jesus still extends His hand, offering freedom, forgiveness, and restoration. The mud of unbelief and self-righteousness need not define us. When we humble ourselves and trust His touch, He lifts us onto solid ground, cleansing our hearts and setting our feet upon the rock of His grace. How might you let Him break through the habits or pride that keep you from walking in His freedom today?
