Matthew 26:20-29
On the night before the cross, we enter the sacred upper room, where the old covenant gave way to the new. Jesus, reclining with His disciples, transformed centuries of tradition into a revelation of eternal grace. What had long been a remembrance of Israel’s deliverance from Egypt now pointed to the true Passover Lamb, whose body and blood would bring freedom from sin and death. The bread and the cup shifted our focus from the past to the promise of Calvary, from remembrance to redemption.
Even as the disciples debated greatness, Jesus demonstrated humility in its purest form, kneeling to wash their feet—including the feet of Judas, the one who would betray Him. Grace flowed freely at that table, poured out before blood was ever shed. The hands that broke the bread were the hands that would be pierced for our salvation. The cup they shared became the symbol of a covenant sealed in His blood, offering forgiveness, fellowship, and new life to all who believe.
In that moment, Christ redefined worship. Tradition became relationship, ritual became remembrance. Each time we partake of the Lord’s Supper, we are invited to look back with gratitude, look inward with reverence, and look forward with hope—to the day when we will share it anew in His Father’s kingdom. The table of communion is a place of renewal, where broken hearts encounter a perfect Savior, and where the story of redemption continues to be written in each of us.
