Leading the church by following the example of Christ
Godly leadership is critical to the church today as many in the church are taking the people in directions that are contrary to the scriptures and more in line with the world.
And while there are many seminars, and there are meetings, and there are books that have been designed to highlight the vital importance of leadership, I do not think that we would be overstating the observation that there is still a lack of godly leadership in the church.
And while some men may be strong natural leaders with a vision for the work, while they may be action oriented, while they may have courage, and while they may be energetic, they may not be the godly leaders that the church so desperately needs today.
But being a godly leader in the church is an impossible assignment without the help and the guidance of the Lord.
The greatest leader who ever walked this earth is the Lord Jesus Christ, so He is the example that we are to follow. He got up early in the morning and He went off to be by Himself and to pray to His Father in heaven, and that is where godly leadership begins.
It begins on our knees, seeking the face of God, reading the scriptures and seeking His perspective. I would suggest that each morning as you pray, you read the Psalms and pray them back to the Lord. It will help to set the tone and direction for the day.
Being a leader in the church can be overwhelming at times. Helping to guide the lives of people with counsel that can have eternal implications is a great responsibility, so we must be sure that this is the direction that the Lord has for us. We will be held accountable.
Once again, Jesus is our example. He led the flock by His example, so our lives must be an example to those in the flock of God.
After years of government service, the enemies of Daniel could find nothing that he had done wrong. A leader like that might be difficult to find today.
Please remember that the people the Lord has entrusted to us are His people. They belong to Him, not us.
But we cannot do this alone. So we must find those who can share in the task, the way that the father-in-law of Moses advised him to find men who could help in the task of leading the people in the wilderness.
And that will give us the time we need to accurately and to thoroughly prepare to teach the truth of the Word of God each week. We must never compromise the Word of God.
So, despite our short comings and despite our failures, we will become the leaders who will be able to stand in the gap for the Lord Jesus Christ.

“The Lord God has given Me the tongue of disciples, that I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word. He awakens Me morning by morning. He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple. The Lord God has opened My ear; and I was not disobedient, nor did I turn back.”
