John 8:31-36
What does it truly mean to be free? The world often defines freedom as independence—the ability to live as we please, unrestrained and unaccountable. We picture birds soaring, fearless and unbound. Yet even they face storms, hunger, and danger. In the same way, life apart from Christ is an illusion of freedom, a slavery disguised as liberty. True freedom is found only in Him.
Jesus confronted this truth in John 8, declaring, “Everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin… but if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” The people of His day assumed their heritage made them free, but Jesus revealed the deeper bondage of sin—a chain no lineage, law, or effort could break. Only the Son of God has the power to liberate, offering forgiveness, cleansing, and transformation to all who trust Him.
True freedom is not the absence of restraint; it is the presence of righteousness. It is not doing whatever we desire, but being empowered to do what we ought. Christ’s freedom is eternal, unshakable, and life-giving. When we abide in His Word, obey His truth, and walk in His light, no power on earth can steal the liberty He provides. If you feel burdened by sin, stop pretending to be “as free as a bird.” Come to Jesus, the only One who breaks every chain. For those whom the Son sets free—are free indeed. How might you step into the freedom He offers today, leaving behind the weight of sin?
