John 8:22-30
In the temple, Jesus reveals one of life’s most heartbreaking truths—the tragedy of missed opportunity. Salvation is offered to all, yet many fail to recognize it because it comes wrapped in humility, sacrifice, and truth. Like the saying that “opportunity comes dressed in overalls,” the greatest opportunity of all—eternal life through Christ—often requires surrender and faith rather than self-reliance or pride.
In this passage, Jesus confronts the religious leaders, warning them that their unbelief would separate them from God: “Where I am going, you cannot come.” Instead of repenting, they responded with ridicule, unable to see that the Messiah they longed for stood before them. Their pride blinded them to the truth, a cautionary mirror for us today, as the world clings to self-made righteousness, worldly success, and empty religion instead of embracing Christ.
Yet even in warning, Jesus extends mercy: “Unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” This is not condemnation but an invitation—a call to turn, believe, and live. The cross would soon reveal His identity fully, but many would realize it too late. Today, the same opportunity stands before us. Will we believe while there is still time, or will we miss the moment that could change our eternity? Reflect: Are you embracing Christ now, or letting pride and distraction blind your heart to the greatest gift ever offered?
