The Two Sons
Genesis 21

The promise long awaited had finally arrived—Sarah, whose laughter once came from disbelief, now held joy itself in her arms. What began as barrenness had become beauty, a living testimony that nothing is impossible with God. Yet even as laughter filled the tents of Abraham, a quiet tension began to stir. For in the shadow of the promised child stood Ishmael, the son of human striving, a reminder of what happens when faith gives way to impatience.

As the two boys played, joy and jealousy collided. Sarah’s fear for Isaac’s future overwhelmed her peace, and her words cut deeply: Hagar and her son must go. Abraham’s heart ached under the weight of obedience and love, torn between what he desired and what God required. But in his surrender, grace still prevailed. God, who never forgets a single promise, assured Abraham that Ishmael too would be blessed, becoming a great nation under His watchful care.

Far from home and hope, Hagar wept in the wilderness. Her tears fell into the dust, but heaven heard. God opened her eyes to a well of living water—a sign that His compassion flows even in the driest places. The story of these two sons still whispers a timeless truth: our plans may falter, but God’s purpose endures. When we trust His timing, the places once marked by loss can become wells of mercy, reminding us that the Lord who provides also redeems every part of our story.
